The archaeological area of Kition is located within the limits of the modern city of Larnaca. The modern town of Larnaca was originally inhabited by Mycenaeans in the 13th century BC (Late Bronze Age and the geometric Period) and two centuries later, it was re-established by Phoenicians as Kition. Excavations of ancient Kition begun by the Swedes in the 1920s, but most of the ancient city remains buried under modern Larnaca. The excavations revealed five successive temples and workshops for smelting the copper. Other significant artefacts discovered were alabaster vases, coins, tools, lamps, limestone seals and engraved stone blocks.
